Yes, Aquila is strictly adults-only. No children or infants under any circumstances are permitted within the accommodation or retreat grounds.
Aquila does not allow pets. It is a working fine-merino wool sheep farm with resident animals, including three large parrot aviaries, free-roaming guinea fowl, and sheep. Guests can observe local wildlife during their stay with binoculars and red-light torches provided within the accommodations. Accredited service animals are permitted.
Yes. Aquila is a solar-powered, sustainable, off-grid retreat, so expect thoughtful eco-systems rather than big-hotel energy. Created with both sustainability and calm comfort in mind, Aquila promises an off-grid experience that doesn't skimp on the necessities - lush linens, raw timber furnishings and kitchen mod-cons.
Aquila offers comfort year-round in Tasmania. Each accommodation includes a wood heater with ample wood supplied, while the three Eco-pods feature reverse-cycle air conditioning and are 6.5-star energy rated for effective passive-energy temperature control. The glamping tent is equipped with both an electric blanket on the bed and a heated throw rug on the couch for added winter warmth.
Layered clothing, comfy shoes, and something warm for evenings. If you're planning sauna time, pack your bathers!
Aquila does not offer guest Wi-Fi; however, the 4G mobile network works well in our location.
Flame Space is the guest communal area. It features a sheltered space complete with a hand-painted artist's mural, an open-air barbeque for guest use, and a fire-pit with recycled timber bench seating to enjoy with a glass of Coal River Valley wine while the sun sets over the valley.
Yes. Aquila offers an outdoor sauna and cold-water bucket contrast therapy. The sauna and cold-water bucket are located at Flame Space. Hot-cold therapy sessions operate on a paid booking system - $50 per couple for an hour-long session – which gives guests exclusive access to Flame Space during their hot-cold therapy session. Guests can add a hot-cold therapy session in the extras section of the booking process, or book one via text during their stay.
The glamping tent, Polygala, and Eco-pod Melaleuca are the two accommodations with private, outdoor clawfoot baths.
The Polygala glamping tent at Aquila is fully accessible and complies with Australian disability standards. We recommend contacting our team with your specific requirements so we can ensure all necessary arrangements are in place for your visit.
Aquila is ideally located in southeastern Tasmania, with breathtaking views of the countryside from every angle. While it is in the heart of one of Tasmania's most prominent wine regions – the Coal River Valley – it is only a 15-minute drive to the Hobart International Airport and a 30-minute drive to Hobart.
Guests are invited to take a stroll around the grounds. Along the way, you'll find some fascinating stories on five strategically located signs. Drop in on the talking Aquila parrots, which add an extra touch of quirky wonder to our already breathtaking landscape. You might get a cheeky wolf whistle or a hello!
As you explore the grounds, admire the amazing sculptures crafted by renowned Tasmanian sculptors. These works of art offer a captivating blend of nature and human creativity, providing the perfect backdrop for unique and memorable Tasmanian photo opportunities.
Aquila is a 2-minute drive from the historic tourist township of Richmond, Tasmania's most-visited town (according to Tasmanian Visitor Survey data), with many boutique shops and cafes. Richmond is also home to Australia's oldest bridge and offers excellent photo opportunities. The Coal River Valley is one of Tasmania's most prominent wine regions, with many cellar doors open all year round. Cheese and chocolate making are also popular in the region.
Aquila is a one-hour drive down the Tasman Peninsula to Tasmania's most-visited tourist site, Port Arthur.
Yes. Aquila has been designed for privacy, seclusion and romance! With features such as heart-shaped fairy lights in the private outdoor baths and a romance package available, Aquila has seen many proposals! Special occasions such as milestone birthdays, wedding anniversaries and baby moons are our speciality!
Yes. The loudest sounds at Aquila are those of nature. Each accommodation is set well apart from the next and angled differently to provide the same breathtaking views without looking into one another. Aquila truly is your permission slip to relax, unwind and reconnect.
No. Hairdryers are not provided in the accommodation. As an off-grid, sustainability-focused retreat, we choose not to supply high-draw appliances like hairdryers. While our sophisticated solar power system can handle occasional use, providing hairdryers isn't aligned with the low-impact experience we aim to offer or our Eco Star Accreditation standards.
If you'd like to use a hairdryer during your stay, please feel welcome to bring your own.
Tasmania's public transport is limited, so a vehicle is the most convenient way to explore beyond Aquila and the Coal River Valley. Taxis and Ubers are readily available from Hobart Airport and Hobart CBD, but not for short trips such as Richmond to Aquila. If you choose not to hire a car, Aquila offers standard E-bikes ($50/day for two) with pedal-assist and touring E-bikes ($100/day for two) with throttle control (no pedalling required) for longer rides. E-bike hire can be added during booking or requested via text while staying.
No. The barbeque is free for guests' use and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The barbecue is unavailable only when a booked hot-cold therapy session is in progress.
